"There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it."
I think this fabulous opening line from The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by
C.S. Lewis speaks for itself.
Beware, Donna, you've opened the floodgates--you may be getting a quote a
day from me!

This is a classic-- considered one of the best ever opening lines in kidlit, or fiction generally.
ReplyDeleteIf this blog makes it to next year, maybe we'll have an opening line theme for next January!
This is my favorite book in the whole Narnia series. Can't wait to see the movie :)
ReplyDeleteI love this one too..Iam hearing some worrisome things about changes to the storyline in the movie...I hope they do not lose the focus on Eustace, because it really is his story more than anyone else's. I guess we'll see!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great quote, and I love the concept of this blog!
ReplyDeletethank you, Jenny!
ReplyDeleteLove it.
ReplyDeleteThanks deborah and all. I'm starting to receive more quotes, so if you don't see yours right away, fear not, it is in the queue and scheduled. I am adding contributors with kidlit blogs to the blogroll as their quotes come in though.
ReplyDeleteOne contributor asked is it okay to link back to this blog on their blog or website-- a resounding YES! I think part of the fun is the frequent updates, which will make a nice feature feeding onto the site of any KidLit enthusiast-- and obviously, I hope, drive more traffic here. So if you link back here-- THANK YOU, much appreciated!
Fabulous quote--one I always associate with my mother reading to me. She started reading me the Narnia books when I was a kid, and I'll always remember that this was the one where I started taking over reading them on my own! I look forward to reading more great quotes.
